Race day begins with the breaking of a new dawn – a world-first sunrise in the land of the first light. Set up, as the sun rises, gather together at the marae as the rural countryside comes to life with native birdsong, sheep and horses rustle to the energetic buzz building before the 6.30am race start. Your mountain is waiting with the nine sacred pou, (pillars), of Maui and his ancestors standing guard at the top of
Mt. Hikurangi. And if you make the 11km trek up in under 1-hour, you automatically become a member of the elite Maui Club. Get amongst it!
As you reach the bottom of Mt. Hikurangi, you will reach the transition area at the woolshed – an important part of the working farm you will arrive at. Spectators, friends and whānau will be cheering on your efforts as you take on Stage 2. Portaloos are available here before grabbing your bike and heading off for a 25km ride through the stunning Tapuaeroa Valley. Traverse country roads with relatively flat gravel and tar sealed surfaces as you make your way to the final stretch.
You come full-circle as you sprint the final 7kms towards Tuparoa Beach. Following the natural course of the river, get ready for a few river crossings along the way with a mix of grass and sand leading up to the shores of the vast Pacific Ocean ahead. The rocks you see in the river come from Mt. Hikurangi so the continuity of this course and connection to this whenua, (land), becomes stronger with every step you take. Hearing the crowds at the finish line and the stunning ocean views, it is a homecoming like you’ve never experienced before.
